Theres the problem, Id say. Thats a pretty old card. Mines a FX 5900(also kinda old now), but I get about 30-70 fps depending on the area, with max settings(except for AA and AF, which I never use anyway).

My previous setup was:
2.5GHz P4
GeForce 5500FX
512 RAM
It ran GW allright. I couldn't put settings to max, but the framerate could hit acceptable levels simply by lowering a few settings. I don't think the card is the problem, unless the OP has settings set to max.

The FX 5500 SHOULD run GW without problems - it was a solid card in its day and GW isn't exactly that demanding. What type of processor do you have? 2.4 GHz could mean a couple different things.

That's exactly what I meant. Could have been a Celeron, a Xenon, an Athlon, or something else for that matter. Because of differences in architecture, 2.4 GHz could mean a lot of different levels of performance.
Anyways, I'm kind of stumped. Your system should run Guild Wars just fine. What settings are you running at?

As to low fps, what else is running besides GW? What other programs are you using? Also do a virus scan to see if theres any one your system(they eat up alot of resources too).

what kind of slot does your graphics card use? agp, pci-e, pci?
my geforce fx5500 uses a pci slot, and it can achieve 24-30 fps in a gvg.
anyways, the pci version is quite rare, so you probably got the agp version. the agp version is technically 80x faster than the pci version, so i have no idea why your fps is so low. do a few virus scans and spyware scans and tell us what you find.

I'm running GW on a 1250 MHz Athlon XP with 1024 mb RAM and a GeForece4 Ti4200 AGP8x.
No problems on my end so it's deffo not the gfx card.
Maybe try updating your gfx driver software if that's possible
PS: how many background or resource processes have you got running?
Maybe install Cacheman to empty out all that excess on mal-used virtual memory.

Install Spywareblaster and Spybot S&D instead
No required background process and no spyware either

My friend has a similar system, and when I messed with GW on his it ran without issue on almost maxed settings. Here's one other thing: do other games have performance problems?

try not running it in the background or running a program like nod32, which imo is great program that uses hardly any bandwidth but still has the great protection. It has been recognised as good software for gamers who play online.
Also on the graphics card I just built an old computer with a FX5500 running on it and it runs fine on medium to low graphics, I think your problem is you need to reformat your computer or even just defragment the hard drive.
Your processor should run it fine

Yes quite right my AMD 64 3800+ which cuts your P4 processor like you wouldn't believe only runs at 2.4GHz, so yes it 2.4ghz could mean alot of things.
My advice is reformatt dude, it is recomended to be done every few months and if you haven't done it in a while you should do it, it requires you dto reinstall windows and wipe the hard drive, so back up the stuff you want before hand.
